Cool new google map for CA schools

Check out this site:
School Performance Maps

It is a google map application that displays school API rankings for all California public schools. They show one county at a time, either primary schools or secondary. There are some gaps in their data, but overall it provides a very interesting way to view school API performance geographically. Yes, API data is of limited interest. Yet, viewing it on a map reveals a great deal of interesting and troubling patterns.

I hope to add similar capabilities to our own San Francisco Schools Information Map someday. These maps let you look at other districts in the state.

Very cool.

This rocks!

We know that geography (and the corresponding SES levels) is a huge predicting or compensating force for school success, but seeing it is another matter.

What strike me is how uniformly the colors move from the outer dark blues to the inner reds, with no variation or deviation.

agree w/ tmao. and, the elementary school map shows the clear east west divide in the city's schools as well.

Note the spot of blue amid the red in SFUSD's eastside that is George Moscone Elementary. I've written about that school as a "hidden gem," but it's still a mystery what its secret is.

Is there a trick for viewing this map? It comes out plain black on my screen. For that matter, all the text in sfschools ends up as a strip on the right-hand side of my screen. Any suggestions?

No trick. I am able to see both these map pages using any of the browsers I have installed: IE, Mozilla, and Opera. If you want help debugging this problem, email me at bernalkc @ gmail.com
