School Beat: A Library Without a Librarian is Just a Room Full of Books
The American Library Association’s recent advocacy campaign asks us to imagine going to the library and finding no one there to help. Sadly, California’s school children need not use their imaginations. There is only one school librarian for every 4,379 students. This is the highest librarian-to-pupil ratio in the country. The situation in San Francisco is particularly bleak. Only 3 of the 75 public elementary schools have a credentialed full-time librarian. Glen Park, LR Flynn, and Stevenson have chosen to spend their site funds on a school librarian.Ren recently hosted an open house celebration of Flynn's remodelled library media center. The SF Sentinel Covered the event here: Flynn Elementary School library devoured by young imaginations. Check out the great pictures, including this one of Superintendent Gwen Chan:

thanks to ren for her great work in the school district!
re libraries - i visited sunset elementary school and ap gianini ms libraries today.
sunset es principal Sophie Lee worked with parents to nail a big grant that got them 3000 new books. they also have newer dell laptop computers. very impressive parent-run libray.
ap gianini's library is also very impressive - the librarian Terry Lai unfortunately is only there 3 days a week. but she runs a great library there.
hopefully the prop h resources over the next few years can ensure the libraries and our librarians are much more of a priority in all the schools, instead of an endangered species...
one of my favorite library boosters is Stephen Krashen -
you can find some of his work at -

Eric, were you part of the CABE group that toured a Middle School on the East Side of San Jose yesterday?
no unfortunately i only attended the conf on friday. other sfusd folks were very active in volunteering in the conf. i will ask if anyone else made it to the middle school. is that where you teach?
Yes. Last Wednesday 35-50 teachers from the CABE conference toured our school, and it was awesome to get that "outsider's" reflection and perspective on the work we've been doing...
