AsianWeek reviews the enrollment controversy

The Catch-22 of Excellence and Diversity Without Race is an interesting article that reviews the ongoing controversy over SFUSD enrollment from an Asian American perspective. It attempts to cover a broad subject in a short space, so much of the story is abbreviated and subjective. But it does a good job of reviewing the highlights of the story.

The changing demographics of the city and its impact on school enrollment are highlighted. It is pivotal element in this ongoing controversy that is often misunderstood. The article places both the NAACP' consent decree and the more recent Ho decision in context of an evolving struggle for equity and civil rights. This is an important perspective that should help reconcile the apparently divergent motivations of the NAACP and the Asian American activists.

The author also covers the legal history of the struggle of Asian Americans for access to good schools, going back to the 19th century and the days of separate but equal. Sobering info that was news to me.
