BOE candidate questions

What questions do you want the BOE candidates to answer? What are the issues that are most important to you?

Here is your chance to propose a question for the candidates. I am collecting input from this blog as well as the sfschools list. I will collect all the questions, edit them down to a reasonable number of questions, present the questionnaire to each candidate, publish the final list here, and publish any responses I get from the candidates.

We tried this on the sfschools list in the last BOE campaign in 2004. I did not budget enough time for the exercise. Even though we ended up with an excellent list of questions, there was not enough time for the candidates to respond. This time I will make sure we get it done sooner.

So submit your question by leaving a comment below. Just click on the "comment" link and fire away. Feel free to comment on any questions that have been proposed. Candidates are welcome to contribute questions too. I may "bump" this post to the top of the page from time to time to give everyone a chance to see this and add have their chance to participate.

Fire away!

[UPDATE] bumping to the top of the page to remind everyone to keep those questions comeing. The SF4D questionnaire was good, but it allows us to drill down into the issues and ask the really probing quesitons. Keep 'em coming.

I'll get the ball rolling with one of the more obvious questions:

What are the most important requirements for a new enrollment policy?

How do you feel about the issue of closing schools with enrollment dropping in SFUSD?

Do you think BOE members should be committed to public education enough to send their kids to SFUSD schools?

If the interests of various stakeholders within SFUSD are at odds, which stakeholders' needs should take priority?

Please give examples of your involvement with children over the last five years. Please explain how we can be sure you are not running for the board as a stepping stone to a political career. Do or did you attend a public school? Which one? What have you done recently to help schools? Do or did your children attend public schools? Will you promise that your children will attend public schools?

Here's questions from some members of The SFUSD Community Advisory Committee for Special Education:

1. What is your experience with Special Education?

2. Are you close to anyone who has a child with disabilities?

3. How familiar are you with the basics of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act?

4. What steps will you take to see that SFUSD gets the funds that it is owed by the Federal Government in order to fully fund I.D.E.A. ?

5. How will you deal with sacrificing services for our children, particularly our most vulnerable children,to meet budget demands?

6. What qualifications are you bringing to the board that will help bring new vision and positive academic achievements for all students despite a continuing lack of decent funding sources?

7. Do you believe that children with disabilities have a right to a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment?

8. Please tell us what you think about the full inclusion of children with disabilities in general education classrooms. Do you think that all schools in SFUSD should allow children with disabilities to be educated in classrooms alongside their non-disabled peers?

9. What are you willing to do and how far are you willing to go to ensure every child in this district, with or without and IEP, learns to read, write, problem solve, and use math to a level where they will pass the graduation requirements and help them have a successful life?

10. How will you deal with entrenched bureaucracy?

If you had to vote on the elimination of JROTC for any reason, would you yes? Why or why not?

What measures would you take to increase the amount of money allocated to the SFUSD? If you are successful, what new or existing programs would be areas you would wish to increase funding?

1) What is your position on school assignment policy? Between the opposing poles of diversity and assignment-area proximity, where do you stand?
2) Do you believe diversity should receive more weighting in admissions to Lowell, School of the Arts and district-wide GATE programs?
