Time has done
another one of those exposes of greedy special ed parents taking districts to court to get reimbursed for fantastically expensive private schools. The reporter spent a lot of time interviewing school district administrators who cried that such cases take money from regular kids -- but she forgot to mention that the Federal government has NEVER met its obligation of paying 40 percent of the cost of special education. Not
once in the 30-year history of the law. Hmm . . . maybe that's why special education is continually underfunded? Nah, let's just blame the parents - they are a much easier target.

Like it or not, it's a sum-zero game. There is only a set amount of money in a district, and if aggressive parents of special-ed students get what they are legally entitled to for their kids, other groups of kids (GATE, ELL, etc) will not get what they are also legally entitled to. The only solution is to increase the pot of money by getting more from Washington, Sacramento or the elderly homeowners.
