Chan questions her ability to work for the BOE

The Examiner is reporting that Gwen Chan is unsure if she will even apply for the superintendent job: Chan: I might not be right person for job
Chan said she’s not so convinced she is the right person for the job, saying the odds are “50-50” she’ll apply. The board’s 4-2 vote on Nov. 14 to eliminate the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps due to anti-war concerns and the military’s ban on gays has made her question what relationship she’d have with the school board, she said. Chan openly expressed support for the program.
I've been a big fan of her tenure so far. I think she has demonstrated a remarkable ability to get things done under extreme pressure — in spite of her interim status, in spite of rancorous BOE politics. If a talented, qualified professional like herself — someone with deep roots in the district and an intimate knowledge of the districts schools — can foresee irreconcilable problems working with the incoming BOE, that is not a good sign. Not a good sign at all.

i don't think she's making a comment about the upcoming boe, moreso about the windbag dan kelly and the others that voted to oust jrotc.

In that case it would only affect her job for another month. I think she IS talking about the incoming BOE.

i will just say that gwen called all board members the day the article appeared to tell us that her comments were misinterpreted by bonnie eslinger.
after the jrotc vote, gwen told me personally that she respects our decisions as the policy making body of the school district.

It's not clear how all the new members would have voted. Hydra Mendoza says she would prefer a non-military program if one were available, but as one isn't, she would vote to support JROTC. Jane Kim ran as a Green Party activist, which would imply that she supports the anti-JROTC position, yet she got strong support from youth who want JROTC to stay and from the Chinese community, which has largely been vocal in favor of JROTC. So it's hard to know for sure. Kim-Shree Maufus has given mixed signals, but her daughter was in JROTC and I think she said she would vote to keep it.

Dan Kelly is married to a person of the X-chromosome persuasion.

Respecting one's decision is not the same as agreeing with one's decision.

Gwen Chan should stay on. It would be better for someone who has worked in the district to be superintendent rather than a transplant to San Francisco.

Thanks for the insight, Eric. I'm surprised that Bonnie would muff the report entirely. I'm sure she is troubled enough by the JROTC BS that she would question her ability to coexist with such a board. But I'll take heart that she is till engaged and willing to try and make it work. I seriously doubt we'll find a substantially better candidate than Gwen.
