2006 Base API data published
I did a quick analysis of SFUSD's district-wide results compared with other large K-12 districts around the state. The results are seen below. The table was derived by taking the complete 2006 base api data file, extracting the 100 largest K-12 district composite data, then sorting that list of 100 districts by the API scores for various sub-groups. Not all districts have statistically significant numbers of each sub-group, so the rankings show both SFUSD's rank and the total number of districts with significant populations in that sub-group. The resulting spreadsheet can be downloaded here.
| Rank | API 06 | API 05 | Growth | |
| All SFUSD | 37 | 755 | 745 | 10 |
| AA | 90:94 | 582 | 576 | 6 |
| American Indian | 29:43 | 696 | 682 | 14 |
| Asian | 51:94 | 842 | 832 | 10 |
| Filipino | 79:82 | 751 | 742 | 9 |
| Hispanic | 86:100 | 642 | 636 | 6 |
| Pacific Islander | 39:40 | 640 | 608 | 32 |
| White | 17:97 | 842 | 833 | 9 |
| Socioeconomically disadvantaged | 14:100 | 721 | 706 | 15 |
| English learners | 15:100 | 725 | 713 | 12 |
| Disabled | 52:100 | 521 | 502 | 19 |
However, the achievement deficits for African American, Filipino, Hispanic, and Pacific Island students are glaring—and getting slightly worse. These sub-groups are improving, but not as fast as the district averages. At the same time, somewhat counter-intuitively, the sub-groups that one might expect to be faced with the hardest challenges are doing better than the district averages. Socioeconomically disadvantaged students and English language learners are doing very well. Curious.

KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy has a Base API score of 836, and their African American students achieve a remarkable 792 average. It sounds like they're doing something right at this school. Can this be replicated elsewhere in the district?
