Thanks to Oakland's NovoMetro blog, today's lead Chronicle story on cheating and other misbehavior at the acclaimed University Prep charter school is not news to all of us, though it fills in lots of details.
The story stands on its own without my succumbing to the temptation to add my own snide comments. Also, thanks to SFGate for providing free permanent access to content.
All I want to say is, be sure to realize that there are teachers suffering at these schools just as much as the students. It's easy to go on an anti-charter tirade, but for some people that's the only teaching job they could get at a certain point in their career. Many, if not most, of the teachers in these schools realize that things are messed up. A lot of teachers were lured by the false promises that these shady charter organizers put forth. So while we debunk the charter myth, let's make sure we're not accidentally ripping into teachers who are being wronged as much as the students.
I do appreciate that about teachers, but thanks for the reminder, because I do need to keep it in mind.
I have a friend who has been teaching at a charter school who's trying to get hired at a traditional public school, so I do see it close up. Best of luck with your career!
Since its founding in 2000, many dedicated school stakeholders have gathered on sfschools@yahoogroups.com to advocate for better schools in San Francisco. The Yahoo group is great for engaging, moblizing, sharing information with a very motivated, diverse group of parents, educators, politicians, and reporters. If you like what you read here and you want to add your voice to our conversation, please join us.
"Think globally, act locally" is an apt motto for this blog. Many issues facing San Francisco schools are regional and national in scope. Here we share our experiences and ideas with a wider audience. Also, many San Franciscans prefer to skip the often passionate debate found on the list. The blog provides them with useful information in an accessible format.
Enjoy!
