SfGate: S.F. school district cracks down on residence cheaters
San Francisco education officials are increasingly going after families who lie about where they live to get into the city's choicest schools, with the school district going so far as to hire private investigators to follow a student home from Lowell High School.Really, there is not that much to gain from cheating in most cases. I think the Lowell application -- and to a lesser extent SOTA too -- are unique in that regard.

It is still preposterous to me that SFUSD is willing to spend money to kick out seniors whose parents finally can afford a home... outside the city. Especially if these seniors have lived in San Francisco all their lives, went to public school all their lives, and contributed tons to Lowell.
It's disgusting that SFUSD is willing to deny someone a Lowell diploma after three years of pure...whatever people believe Lowell is.
But then check out the quote from that one student who says that if her sister got aced out by an out-of-district student she'd be ticked. I think you could argue it both ways. For years I've heard angry parents denounce "that stupid school district" for NOT doing this aggressively.
SOTA accepts 10% out-of-district students -- its original design was to be a regional school, and that's still in effect. There's some sentiment that that needs to change, but my son says: "It's about the art, not the geography."
